Fruit Enzymes in Lip Care: What They Actually Do
Papain and bromelain break down protein. That is the mechanism — and the evidence for cosmetic use is more modest than the marketing.
The mechanism
Papain comes from papaya, bromelain from pineapple. Both are proteolytic enzymes: they act on protein. In a cosmetic context that means loosening the bonds between the loose, already-shedding material at the surface, so it can be removed without friction.
This is why enzyme exfoliation is described as chemical rather than mechanical. Nothing is being scraped. Something is being loosened.
What the evidence supports
Reviews of proteolytic enzymes as cosmetic exfoliating agents describe them as studied and plausible, while noting plainly that clinical evidence is limited. They also flag that enzyme activity depends on conditions — pH and temperature — and that stabilising an enzyme in a finished product is a formulation problem in its own right.
The same literature notes irritation and allergen potential. Enzymes are not automatically mild because they come from fruit.
What that means when you're reading a label
- Presence on an ingredient list is not the same as activity in the finished product.
- Wear time and use frequency matter as much as inclusion.
- Gentler in mechanism does not mean risk-free — patch behaviour still varies by person.
- Don't use enzyme products on split, bleeding or actively irritated lips.
- Fruit-derived is a source, not a safety rating.
Where ButtahJam uses them
SugahJam™, the jelly lip mask, is formulated with papaya and mango enzymes. Its role in the wardrobe is the reset: a short sit on the lip, then wiped away, so the melt that follows sits on an even surface. We do not publish concentrations, and we do not claim it does anything a mask cannot do.
Sugarcane also appears in the ingredient world. A published safety assessment of Saccharum officinarum-derived cosmetic ingredients describes several of them as functioning mainly as skin-conditioning agents and assesses them as safe in the cosmetic uses described. That is a safety review, not proof of efficacy, and sugarcane extract should not be assumed to behave like a hydroxy acid.
The honest summary
Fruit enzymes are a reasonable, non-abrasive way to help loosen surface flaking, used briefly and in a well-built formula. They are not a treatment, they are not a cure for chronically dry lips, and they will not out-work an irritating product you are still using or a habit of licking and picking.
